ICMA COMPETITION 2022: PULLMAN MOSCOW AIRPORT
Every spring, the Idaho Concrete Masonry Association holds a competition at the University of Idaho to see how students can use CMUs (concrete masonry units, like cinder blocks) in new and innovative ways. My project used CMUs and the spaces between them to create a dynamic curving facade that could still be reasonably practical to manufacture. The wavy front facade invokes the feeling of flight while the slit portal windows scattered along it give a dynamic parallax-like view from both the interior and exterior of the building. Clerestory windows wrap around it allowing light to penetrate deep into the building's interior, and 2 courtyards allow for people to take a break from the busy airport environment. While entries into this competition were not considered in the design and construction of the new Pullman Moscow airport, my design placed as a finalist among approximately 50 other designs.
